No one intentionally makes a tacky wedding (not that I know!) So, read on to make sure you do not make mistakes that can make your wedding "one person" marriage.

Too Many Colors

A wedding should be elegant, sophisticated, "adult" business, and while the touch of color here and there to add interest & ties all elements together, too many colors, or try to "fit in" all things will make your wedding look more like a girl - teenage girl birthday party and a sophisticated wedding.

Remember the saying "Less is more". Try to remember this when brainstorming ideas for wedding decorating. Natural color and continue to use only very few bright colors as an accent on the here & there.

Try To Match Everything

You do not always have to match the color of the bridesmaid dress with a tie, a groomsman, or the tablecloth, etc. If you have a bright color for your bridesmaids, try to use more subtle colors if you really have to "match".

I feel better to keep the natural colors like white, cream, silver, gold, brown, green (natural green) and black. Select 1 or 2 of this as your main color for wedding decorating with and use a small accent color of your bridesmaids. Example;

* Cream tea towel with beige tablecloths with black or gold table runners. Then use your theme color in the ribbon as napkin holders at each place, or as a colored card to the card,

* An idea is to use the cream Centerpiece mostly flowers and trees with one or 2 of your theme color flowers.

* Use all white linen with a green table runners, and if you have a purple bridesmaid peacock feathers or other purple flowers as the center (purple & green are great together)

* Use all white linen table runners and Black Mirror on the table by sitting in a vase with white flowers and black feathers - very Hollywood charm and will go with the color of the bridesmaids

If you must use a bright color and match it - try to make white or cream color primary colors and bright colors just a touch here and there will look very elegant.

However, if you have a very large, empty space or a flat as a living room, then you can get away with a little more colorful. Tip is standing in a room with no decorations and decide whether it was boring, busy, or average. If it was boring - appeared decorations to add interest. If busy, use all white or all cream with just a light brown or gold color to transform space-efficient and if the average, then follow the above suggestions.

Too Many Wrong Element

Silk flowers and fake plants are an inexpensive way to add interest to the living room, but make sure you can not say they are false (unless you touch them). If you are not able to flower as the center, probably better not to use it instead of just using silk or plastic (please - do not use plastic). Some ideas for wedding center is;

* Candles are fantastic & relatively cheaply from thrift shops or 2 dollars. Buy enough for 3, each a different height for each table. Then bought a beautiful plate (from the second hand shop) or a piece of glass or a mirror for them all to sit on top and there you have it, a beautiful, cheap middle.

* Feathers can be a great addition eyed. Depending on your color scheme, you can use a peacock feather or you can buy a big feather who have died for whatever color of most craft stores.

* Or you can make your own flower centerpieces instead of using flowers. Buy a vase tall enough to 1 per table. (You can hire them, but sometimes it can be cheaper to buy from a thrift or dollar store 2) Then get the most trusted aunt or friend who is not in the bridal party to go to a flower shop on the morning of your wedding and buy a few lily white long white or other large high-stronger-stemmed flowers. Enough to get 3-per table (do not tell to their flower shop for a wedding because they will double or triple the price!) Using Lily's with one or 2 long coat color and a high wicker (rattan can be bought from craft stores or flower shops ). Then wrap width Black, White or Cream ribbon at the top of the vase for decoration cheap but the middle.

* Tip - prepare rattan, feathers and ribbons in the vase on the front, then all your friends to do is to transport them and bring them into the living room to place flowers on the water. Set this before the reception center so they are aware.

You can create your own using any flower centerpieces, but the key to keeping them low is to use more than other elements and only a few flowers, are much cheaper to do most of the work / study / etc set yourself up in advance with a friend or aunt on the day set up for you (make sure you buy them thank you gifts for their problems).

I hope the ideas wedding decorating have been given something to think about. As long as you remember these 3 things: 1. Keep it Simple 2. Keep it natural and 3. Getting the opinion of outsiders, if in doubt, then your wedding will be beautiful, elegant & tasteful affair.

In the end, your marriage is a personal expression of you and your fiance love each other so that the ideas you have wedding decorations, so try not to stress about them but if you follow my advice you will receive friends and family compliment your wedding decor ideas ideas and maybe even steal some of them for the wedding of their own future!

Historic sites in the marriage may take a little extra work. You must be ready to change your plans to make them suitable for building. There are many considerations that must be taken in planning any wedding elegant, but with historical sites, there is more to consider.

1. Does the building have structural limits? This includes, room, rooms too small for the dance or damaged so that the party split. Bridal registry – what’s it all about? Traditionally, there have been two reasons to set up a gift registry in the days leading up to your wedding. First, it allows you to select items you need in your new, married life. Secondly, gift registry is designed to make shopping easier for your wedding guests. These days the term “bridal” is a bit misleading. It’s not just the bride who should be involved with this aspect of wedding planning. “Couples” registry might be more appropriate.

One of the biggest mistakes couples make when registering is heading into the store unprepared. Before you begin the process, talk with your fiance about your choices, preferences and individual needs. Do you plan to hold formal dinners often or is your lifestyle more casual? Is your kitchen already full of appliances or lacking the essentials? Does your taste run more to contemporary, country, or Swedish modern? Once you have decided on general preferences, then you’re ready to start selecting specific items for your registry.

Include a wide range of merchandise. Registries are no longer just about linens and formal china. Couples today are getting married later and many already have the basic home and kitchen items. So instead, you might consider recreational items such as camping gear or workshop items such as power tools. Also choose items within a range of prices to fit any budget, that way all your guests can use the registry, not just rich Uncle Al.

Be realistic about your needs. If you can’t imagine ever using a gigantic silver serving tray, don’t register for it, as storage space is always a consideration. If your current food processor works fine, don’t register for another one, just because it’s on a kitchen checklist you saw in a magazine.

Go with list in hand and stick to it. Wandering aimlessly around the store until you see things you like, will be a long and frustrating proposition. Most bridal magazines have a list of popular items which you can revise to meet your own needs. Or ask the store(s) if they offer such a worksheet.

When should you register? As a general rule, it should be completed no less than five months ahead of your wedding day and even earlier if possible. It’s a good idea to check back with the store(s) occasionally and again a month before the wedding to make sure your selections are still available and in stock.

When it comes to registry, getting the word out is probably your toughest challenge. Experts say it’s a serious breach of etiquette to list your registry on your wedding invitations. For the most part, you must rely on word of mouth. As soon as you’ve registered, let close friends and family know. Two other options are placing a discreet link on your wedding website or putting a small notice in your wedding shower invitations.

When asked directly where you’re registered, don’t hesitate to give a straightforward answer. Some people feel a sense of guilt when a guest comments, “I won’t be able to make your wedding, but where are you registered? “If someone does ask directly, it’s likely they really do want to know the answer and give you a gift. You might answer in this fashion, “We’re registered at Bloomingdale’s and Home Depot, but please don’t feel you have to get us something”.

A very new trend in gift giving is the honeymoon registry. Items on a honeymoon registry include activities or extras the couple would like to do while on their honeymoon. Additionally, gifts are broken down into financially manageable portions. Guests can give airfare, room nights, candlelit dinners, excursions such as horseback riding on the beach, or ski lift tickets. A great snorkeling trip for example, can create honeymoon memories couples remember forever, a unique gift that keeps on giving.

Not all travel agencies handle honeymoon registry. Some might advertise the service, but offer little more than an opportunity for your friends and family to mail checks toward the trip. If you’re considering this type of registry, find a service which provides more. Look for a company that specializes in honeymoon registry.

All gift givers want to feel they’ve purchased something meaningful. Receiving a list describing in detail what they’ve purchased, improves their gift giving experience. This may come in the form of a certificate. A travel agency with an 800 number is also helpful for out-of-town wedding guests.

Another new trend is on-line gift registry, which can be more convenient and quicker for computer-savvy folks.

I know, I know, I have already waxed lyrical on the virtues of Pantone here and here - but please indulge me just one more time... have a look at the new myPantone app for the iPhone.

You can select from a number of the Pantone swatch books (Pastel Uncoated Formula Guide is a favourite), then pull together palettes of coordinating colours, save them for future reference, enlarge individual swatches to full screen size, sample colours from photos you've taken and match the sample to an actual Pantone colour - brilliant idea!

Wedding planning for lesbian weddings? Yesterday the soap opera All My Children featured the first lesbian wedding on daytime television. Each partner wore beautiful designer gowns. Bianca’s was a Grecian-inspired satin dress, designed by Monique Lhuillier, while Reese wore a gown by Michael Gm.

Many same-sex weddings follow the traditions of heterosexual wedding ceremonies, as they did on the television show. One thing to remember is that many of the guests may be attending a same-sex wedding for the first time. The couple may want to take the opportunity to talk about the ceremony and what it means to them. However, they should not feel obligated to do so. They may just want to make the day a celebration of their love and commitment to each other.

The happy couple had set the date and decided upon the venue…. With 7 months until the big day the event management team's assistance was essential to make their big day a very special day.

As most brides want to be involved in organising their dream wedding, we met up with the bride and listened to all the requirements in order to get a better understanding of what was needed from our wedding team.

Our client proceeded with organising the church, colour scheme, wedding dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, grooms, best man and ushers suits, invitations, flowers, wedding cake and the rings. You are probably thinking what else could be required, especially from event organisers….

Our event management team's responsibilities mainly included the management of the wedding reception venue and the evening party. The client had provided us with a list of her requirements and we were now ready to begin the preparations.

7 Months until the big day - We attended the venue in order to discuss the wedding breakfast package, menu choices, table set up, the possibility of exclusive hire, opening/closing times and entertainment limitations. After the meeting we began looking at hiring the DJ, fireworks, entertainment, table favours and decorations, all which were within the client’s budget.

Month 6 - DJ and fireworks were booked

Month 5 - Following the meal tasting, a meeting was arranged with our clients in order to obtain their feedback based on which suggestions were made as to the meal and wine choices for their guests. Our clients decided that their guests should be able to choose their meal and it was, therefore, agreed that a menu would be included with the wedding invitation.

Month 4 and 3 - The wedding invitations required the RSVPs to be returned by Month 2; therefore, during this time our services were not needed.

Month 2 - All the RSVPs were returned to us together with the meal/wine choices and the suggested table plan. The gathered information was entered into a spreadsheet which was supplied to the venue. The venue was very appreciative of our efforts and indicated that this spreadsheet would be very useful.

Month 1, week 4 - All the table favours were purchased. Arrangements were made with the venue to have a trial function room set up for 10 tables of 8 people, to help visualise how the tables would look on the day. It was during this trial that we realised this layout would not work and therefore decided to have 8 tables of 10 people, then a head table for the bridal party. The table layout was therefore revised and the revised information forwarded to the venue.

Month 1, week 3 - Contacts were made with the DJ to confirm the song for the first dance and the firework display organisation to confirm the time.

Month 1, week 2 - Further contact was made with the venue to confirm application approval by the council had been made for the late license. This had been approved and the closing time for the venue was now 1am.

Month 1, week 1 - A meeting was arranged with the venue staff to confirm when the newlyweds and their guests would be arriving. To ensure nothing was left out, the venue staff was supplied with an itinerary of the day.

Big day - Our event management team arrived at the venue at 11am, the tables were already in position in accordance to the provided table plan, leaving us to set as per our clients request. During the next few hours we placed the balloons, place cards, table favours, ‘thank you’ gifts, centrepieces and the wedding cake in their designated positions.

Our job did not end there! Further preparation was required in the form of a second room for the evening part of the celebrations.

Gia Canali takes such lovely photos, so I'm thrilled to have a chance to share her work with you on Snippet & Ink... Sharlyn shared with me why she and Jim chose this for their wedding: "We had recently moved to the Bay Area and wanted to provide an exciting opportunity to have our friends and family join us for a long wedding weekend get-away. We liked the charming feel of Healdsburg and absolutely fell in love with Healdsburg Country Gardens - it was quaint, private and romantic. Nothing pretentious or gaudy. The amazing oak tree overlooking the vineyards symbolizing a new life of strength and wisdom, the European gardens that wound around the premises, and the 1804 barn just sealed the deal as my husband had asked me to marry him at a barn in Seattle (with my horse in tow). Believe me when I tell you, he wanted to figure out a way to have my horse there at the ceremony!"

As much as I love wedding photos, I just can't resist the sweet stories from the bride and groom that might not be visible in pictures. Sharlyn shares one of her favorite moments from the day: "A light wind had picked up during the ceremony, blowing through the grapevines and oak tree. After the exchanging of vows and the kiss, we walked down the grass aisle to have the wind scoop my veil up and tightly wrap Jim up in it. As soon as it was unraveled, the wind blew again only to find Jim wrapped closely to my side in the veil. It was a great symbol of our now joined life together." Sharlyn's mother made her veil.

Real Wedding: Elizabeth & Noah

Noah and Elizabeth are a "BBQ loving Southerner and vegetarian New Englander," and they were married somewhere in between at this historical Maryland inn. Katie Stoops from Open Air Photography sent over some beautiful photos of this timeless wedding...

Elizabeth wore fresh lavender in her hair.

With more than 20 children in attendance, it was important to include them and make the wedding enjoyable for them, too. The innkeepers set up a kids' station with kid-friendly foods and floor seating with pillows. They also had babysitters on site for the little ones and so parents could enjoy the evening stress free.

Favors were 5 dragees in canvas tea bags, with a tag that read "five wishes for a sweet life."

Elizabeth shares this bit about the cake: "About 8 months before the wedding, I couldn't think of the perfect wedding gift for Noah, until I was watching an episode of the Food Network's Ace of Cakes. The idea hit me, and several friends and family kept this a guarded secret until the reception. Noah is a longtime Star Wars fan, so I auditioned all of the characters in my mind until I decided on the Millennium Falcon ship. He had no idea until we walked into the tent and were walking up to the cake."

The fireworks were one of the couple's favorite moments of the day. Since they love fireworks, they chose to fit it into their budget, and surprised all of their guests with a beautiful finale to the day.

Planning Ahead

So there are so many things to consider when picking a wedding date. Sure, you may have a perfect date in your head but you must realistically consider other events hapenning besides your wedding...
For instance, a beautiful Fall wedding sounds great in theory, but what happens if it falls on the biggest local college football game? Would you really want to be stuck in traffic with angry fans trying to get to a tailgate on your wedding day? You don't want your guests showing up hours late to your ceremony or reception.

Traffic isn't the only thing that worries us. Big weekend events call for higher hotel prices, higher rental rates, as well as increased package prices for some vendors.

Every season has it's downfalls. Winter brings in corporate holiday parties and increase chance of snow storms up north. Springs and Summers brings local community events like art festivals, local shows, and not to mention hot, rainy seasons.

So when picking a date, plan ahead! Consider all of your options including community events to ensure that the day runs smoothly!

Real Wedding: Dmitra & Pascal

In some ways, today's feature is an ode to a dress, but I also love sharing a couple's wedding day story in their own words, especially when it is put as beautifully as this one was. I enjoyed reading this lovely story from Dmitra and Pascal as much as I enjoyed their amazing wedding ensembles (photographed by the talented Jude Mooney)...

"Dmitra and Pascal finally decided to get married on their 10 year anniversary. Pascal is French and sometimes feels he was born in the wrong century, so they chose to have 18th century ensembles created. She wanted lush and gorgeous clothing that wasn't too theatrical, while he wanted to retain his punk rock aesthetic. Master San Francisco costume designer and couturier Todd Roehrman helped the couple hone in on their vision through historical costume research, creating sketches and sifting through fabrics. Dmitra's dress featured a fully hand-built embroidered silk corset and cascading, hand-made silk flowers, one of Roehrman's specialties. He also created a striking pheasant feather headdress and velvet collar, finished with period silk brocade and buckle shoes. Todd added industrial zipper piping, large clasps and silk flowers to Pascal's gentleman's frock coat and pants, paired with an embroidered silk vest and the quintessential black boots. Everyone else got to wear whatever they wanted, which made for an eclectic and originally bedecked audience. The ceremony and reception were held on a friend's private ranch near Sonoma, surrounded by ancient oak trees and rolling hills. The couple ended the ceremony by jumping over a manzanita broom made by a friend in the African American tradition of Dmitra's heritage. They have a 9 year old son, Keda Dawn, who would not wear his fancy Indian suit but did come down out of the oak tree to put the rings on his parents."

Dmitra shares her favorite reading from the ceremony, an Egyptian song dating from 1300-1100BCE, found inscribed on a vase in hieroglyphs and adapted by Robert Haas: This love is as good as oil and honey to the throat / as linen to the body, as fine garments to the gods / as incense to worshippers when they enter in / as the little seal-ring to my finger / it is like a ripe pear in a man's hand / it is like the dates we mix with wine / it is like the seeds the / baker adds to the bread. / We will be together even when old age comes. / And the days in / between will be like food set before us, / dates and honey, bread and wine.

Real Wedding: Courtney & Christian

I'm sure you already know of my love for Jonathan Canlas' photography, and today's feature is no exception. Courtney and Christian's wedding was a beautiful, classic event at the bride's childhood home. Says Courtney: "I always wanted to have my reception at home, in my backyard. I am from Maryland and I love the big, tall green trees in my backyard. Each of my four sisters also had their receptions at home, and I have grown up looking forward to mine. Another wonderful thing that I loved about our wedding is that we got married at 2:00pm. We had all morning to relax, and at 11:00am we went out for brunch with just our parents. It was so nice and peaceful. After that we went to the LDS temple to be married, and the rest of the day just flowed. The weather was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, which is a miracle because it had literally rained for the two weeks before that day, and the two weeks after it."

I know it's still the middle of autumn, but I was so inspired by this orchid and kumquat and couldn't wait to create a chic winter wedding board with it in mind. Crisp white is the perfect backdrop for this unique winter palette of evergreen and orange. Though it's not a minimalist look, the details are simple and not over done. It balances classic and modern, for a timeless yet updated look. Real Wedding: Rebecca & Keith

Rebecca and Keith's August wedding looks like such a fun time, and I'm so glad they decided to share it with us. Here is a bit from Rebecca about the planning process: Since we're both grad students now, we knew we needed to plan a wedding on a budget. Our friends and family are all uniquely creative, so we knew we wanted to incorporate their skills and talents. We wanted a wedding reception that would be a fun party first, and a wedding second. When my Dad offered his backyard as the venue for the reception and we decided that it would be the perfect spot to have our reception: free, gorgeous and casual. As for the ceremony, Meditation Mount was also suggested by my Dad (he sort of became our wedding planner).

Instead of "getting ready" shots, Keith wanted to do something fun with his groomsmen for pre-wedding photos. His brother, the best man, arranged an archery lesson as a last minute surprise.

How great is this detail about the flowers: Keith chose three things to take charge of for the wedding: flowers, music and booze. He took a lesson in bouquet construction at Chestunut and Vine, and learned how to make a perfect bouquet. He foraged in Ojai for a lot of the grasses and flowers in my bouquet. He also made boutonnieres from succulents we grew at home, corsages for our Moms, and the centerpieces which were our own succulent collection housed in wooden boxes from IKEA.

Rebecca wore gorgeous green earrings by Jennifer Miller.

The bridesmaids wore green J.Crew dresses.

I love this passage from Rebecca and Keith's wedding ceremony, spoken by their officiant:
There are a couple things about the ceremony I want you to know. First - It is not going to be that long, maybe 20 minutes, and second - at some point, I will ask: WHO STANDS FOR AND BLESSES THIS MARRIAGE? And you have the opportunity to say WE DO. This will not be a time to be shy…this is a time to be loud and wild and full of love. Your endorsement is a gift. We checked in with the center’s staff and they said a joyful whoop is ok - so feel free to really go for it. (Says Rebecca, "My husband loved it so much, he asked her to have them do it again, and they shouted WE DO!!!! again. It was amazing.")

In addition to the live centerpieces, the tables were decorated with sea glass collected by the couple on trips to the beach, and mason jars filled with river rocks also collected by Rebecca and Keith. Each table was named after a different beach.

I love this hilarious cake topper by Melabo! Rebecca says they chose it because, "Keith runs like a giraffe and I hibernate like a bear, so it seemed fitting." Dinner was catered by a favorite taqueria, drinks were purchased from Costco, and dessert was a traditional Mexican tres leches cake.

What's not to love about a wedding that includes a dance-off! Rebecca reports there was break dancing and moon walking galore.

We can't help ourselves, we love the flowers that are in season right now and thought we should give some tips to you brides. It doesn't matter how much you love a certain flower, you need to make sure it is in season by asking your florist. If your particular flower isn't in season, you may have to pay extra to have it shipped from somewhere across the world or you will just have to change your date...please, don't do that!

Real Wedding: Mia & Christian

Our friends from A Bryan Photo are back today to share this beautiful Southern soiree with us. Mia and Christian's June wedding took place at the beautiful Belmont in Elkridge, Maryland, and though the morning of the wedding was full of heavy rain and wind, the sky cleared just an hour before the ceremony and made for a picture perfect wedding...

Mia wore a gorgeous gown by Oscar de la Renta purchased at Mark Ingram's Bridal Atelier in New York.

Mia embellished basic paper parasols with pink paper petals for the flower girls. Mia owns bridesmaid dress boutique, Garnish, and she chose dresses by her friend Anna Elyse for both the flower girls and the bridesmaids.

All of the stationery, from the invitations to the programs to the menus, were designed by Mia's friend Katie at Chelle Paperie (you may remember Katie's wedding feature from a while back). Peach and cream were used throughout, as well as a dragonfly motif inspired by Mia and Christian's china pattern.

Mia shares a bit about the ceremony: Our officiant was the pastor that baptized me when I was a little girl. My family is from South Carolina and we were raised Southern Baptist. To give a little feel of the south to the wedding, we jumped the broom after our ceremony, a family tradition which is followed on my mother's side.

A gospel choir sang the guests into the cocktail hour, where the sipped Arnold Palmers in the Belmont's gardens.

Christian and his groomsmen wore navy blazers and khaki pants purchased at Peter Elliot in New York, as well as coordinating neckties.

All of the flowers were arranged by Mia's friend Shawn at The Floral Studio, a boutique right next to Mia's shop.

Since Christian's favorite pastime is sailing, the couple wanted to incorporate a small nautical element in their decor - he came up with the idea of including goldfish in the centerpieces.

Favors were tiny copies of the book I Like You by Sandol Stoddard, which was also included as a ceremony reading.

The four-tier buttercream cake had alternating lemon and chocolate layers. Mia's mother helped choose the other treats for the dessert buffet, including cookies, cupcakes, chocolate covered fruit, macarons, and fruit tarts.

The night ended with confetti poppers! Also, I had to share this wonderful detail with you, from Mia: My husband had a little surprise for all of us and was called on stage later in the evening and played drums with the band. He had apparently traveled to new york and practiced with them after telling me he was going away on a business trip. It was an awesome surprise and got all of our guests excited!

I mean, take a quick look at this photo and tell me what decade it belongs in. Do you consider more than one??

Real Wedding: Anna & Bruno

Anna and Bruno planned a wedding that reflected their interests and personalities, and they were kind enough to share it with us today. But before we get to the photos, I love this detail from Anna, about one of her favorite parts of the day: "The morning of the wedding, I came out of my room tired and stressed. My friends took my to do list away, swarmed around me and rubbed my hands and feet, putting cucumbers on my eyes and offering words of reassurance and comfort." What a great way to start the day!

Anna is a children's author and illustrator, so she did some illustrations of herself and Bruno as bunnies, which were incorporated throughout the wedding, from the invitations to custom buttons. The wedding took place at Nine Mountain Retreat Center in the Berkshires - Anna and Bruno chose this venue so that they could spend the entire weekend with their 50 guests.

Anna designed and illustrated the save-the-dates and invitations, which were Gocco printed by Etsy vendor Heatherjeany.

The outdoor ceremony area was decorated with garlands of origami cranes that many friends and family helped to fold and string. Anna and Bruno walked down the aisle together, following their parents.

A friend read Anna's favorite children's book, The Rabbits' Wedding, as one of the ceremony readings.

During the ceremony, the couple planted a small oak tree, and invited their parents to contribute soil from the places where Anna and Bruno grew up.

How cool is this art installation on the retreat property?

Anna wore a dress from BCBG that she embellished with handmade organza flowers. Bruno wore a suit from Banana Republic.

Anna and Bruno wanted to avoid paper napkins at their wedding, so Anna made darling mismatched napkins for the reception, which doubled as favors for their guests.

Some advice from Anna: Don't worry about what other people will think about your wedding. Do something that is meaningful and special to you and people will be moved and excited about it. Also, while I am a big fan of DIY, don't take on more than you can reasonably do! Pick and choose the projects you care about, and let the rest go.

A Brazilian-inspired meal was served to honor Bruno's heritage. In addition, after dinner, Bruno changed out of his suit and played Capoeira with his friends.

Tin cans and Ball jars were used as vases. The flowers were bought in bulk from a local organic farm, and then arranged by the couple and their friends the day before the wedding.

Board #439: Mercury Glass and Whimsy

Another Halloween-inspired wedding board for you today, though again I tried to keep it from being too obvious. The palette is elegantly whimsical - fitting for both a black tie affair and a Halloween soiree. Silver jack-o-lanterns set the mood, though nothing overly shiny and new - mercury glass has a tarnished look to it that's just perfect here. Black polka dots on a white backdrop are wonderfully fun. Make table numbers key players in centerpieces, by creating number collections under a bell jar: glittered numbers, dominoes, playing cards all let guests know where to sit. I couldn't find any great images for this, but I think that silver glittered spider webs could be a nice touch - maybe as favors for your guests.

Real Wedding: Jennifer & Manny

The playfulness and whimsy in today's real wedding is absolutely irresistible! Jennifer is an art director and graphic designer for Nickelodeon, and Manny, formerly a comic book illustrator and cartoonist, is creative director at an ad agency. Says Jennifer, "You can imagine the spinning wheels going on for us when creating an event. We really didn't want to make it an epic project. I have a huge appreciation for such things and I'm extremely detail oriented, but we wanted to focus on relaxing and not being stressed out. I had to restrain myself a bit, but I'm grateful - less was more!" But no matter how much they held back, their creativity and playfulness is apparent in these beautiful photos by Erik Ekroth.

40 guests joined Jennifer and Manny for their May wedding. The ceremony took place at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, followed by a reception at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. From Jennifer: "We chose to have a very small and intimate wedding. Manny and I were both previously married, and wanted to focus on different things this time around. We wanted to invite those who were close to us and to offer a really special experience for our guests. Food was definitely a priority and that is why we chose this venue. We loved the idea that a farm could be laid back, yet elegant. Also, the venue was beautiful on its own - it didn't need a lot of prep work, which was something we wanted to avoid."

And now, on to the photos!

As a graphic designer, Jennifer really got into designing the invitation suite. Each piece incorporated illustrations from vintage children's books, as well as Betsy Dunlap's wonderfully whimsical calligraphy. The pale pink, dusty blue, and cream color scheme was perfectly light-hearted.

Blue Hill at Stone Barns provided all of the flowers, including Jennifer's pink and white peony bouquet. Jennifer worked directly with Carmela Sutera in choosing her wedding dress, and paired it with blue floral peep toes. (Make sure you enlarge this photo and check out all of the detail on that dress!)

Jennifer used vintage embroidered flowers to make a simple and lovely hair pin.

Jennifer shares a bit about the importance of family for their wedding: "Not having a bridal party was special for us because it was myself and Manny and his two boys. Jacen (age 10) was Manny's best man, and Logan (age 6) walked me down the aisle. One of my favorite moments was being walked down the aisle by Logan. He was so proud and took it sooo seriously and wanted to do the best job! And he did! It was special that our new family was the focus - it was a great bonding experience." Though they didn't have a cake, Jennifer and Manny had a cake topper custom made by The Small Object, even including the boys' orange bow ties!

Jennifer made orange bow ties for the boys, as well as boutonnieres from vintage wooden toys - what a great alternative to a floral boutonniere!

Manny wore a gray Ralph Lauren suit purchased at Kohl's.

Jennifer says that the wedding felt more like an elegant dinner party than anything else, starting with passed hors d'oeuvres and a signature cocktail: a black currant cosmopolitan. The three course dinner included: "Greenhouse Greens and Herbs salad with asparagus, apricots and this morning's farm egg; Stinging Nettle Cavatelli with mushrooms and asparagus; Loin of Beef with cracked wheat, quinoa and parsnips." Each course included a wine pairing.

The children's book illustrations made an appearance again as table "numbers."

The littler guests were greeted at their seats by various stuffed animals.

Instead of wedding cake, dessert was a crunchy chocolate hazelnut brownie with maple ice cream. Music was provided by the couple's iPod!

One of my favorite things about Manny and Jennifer's wedding is that it's proof that a small intimate dinner party doesn't have to be stuffy - it can still be totally playful and fun! Thank you so much to both of you for sharing this wonderful day with us, and to Erik Ekroth for sending over these fabulous photos (don't you love those dancing shots?). Board #438: October Whimsy

Inspiration boards are back! If you want to give a bit of Halloween flair to your October wedding, without going all the way with jack-o-lanterns and candy corn, black-and-white stripes, checks, and silhouettes are the right color and add a certain whimsy. Just the smallest touches of orange make it a truly Halloween palette. But not a pumpkin in sight!

Day Of Planner vs Full Service

I think there is a misconception as to what a Day Of Coordinator (or Month of...or whatever your planner calls it) and what a Full Service Wedding Planner can do to help you.

There are similarities and differences.

Both services will be there on your wedding day or organize and orchestrate your wedding day. And you get to work with a planner, but the similaries sort of end there.

If you have a Full Service Coordinator they will do the following, plus a TON more:

• Help with budget

• Review contracts and negotiate your contracts, make sure nothing is missing or duplicated

• Offer Vendor Recommendations

• Attend your meetings with your vendors (offer our opinions)

• Assist with décor

• Help with Set up and possibly breakdown

• Be “In-the-know” with every aspect of your wedding

• Create and extensive timeline for each vendor involved in your wedding

• Organize and Orchestrate your Rehearsal and Wedding Day

• More extensive time on the day of the wedding

• And Much, much more!

What can a Day Of Coordinator do for you:

• Be there on the day of your wedding and your rehearsal to organize and orchestrate your day

• Meet with you 1 or 2 times prior to your wedding

• Be there for a limited amount of time on your wedding day

• Create a timeline

• Coordinate your Ceremony

It really depends on what you need. How much you’ve planned.

Bridal Shower for Erica

This sweet bridal shower comes to us from the lovely Maria of Ritzy Bee! This summer, she hosted a brunch for her younger sister, Erica, with a tying-the-knot motif - and she was kind enough to share it with us. Kate Headley was there to capture it in photos. This party is such a great example of how beautiful doesn't have to mean over the top or elaborate - simple can be just perfect.

The letterpressed invitations by Simplesong Design (oh, how I love her work!) were enclosed in linen envelopes.

Holly Chapple created some beautiful arrangements for the buffet table and around the house.

The brunch buffet, catered by RSVP Catering, included bagels and lox, shrimp and grits, french toast, and of course mimosas and bellinis.

The tying-the-knot theme even included the straws! Napkins read "Tie One On."

I love the use of burlap and twine to add texture and interest to a simple glass vase.

Guests took home burlap sacks filled with saltwater taffy.

Dear Brides,

First let me congratulate you on your-up-and-coming wedding! I know you've been dreaming about this day for a long time and you want it all to be perfect! Trust me, we of all people know that. And maybe some of you haven't been dreaming about this day forever, and now are just realizing that you need to plan this shin-dig!

A lot of you want to plan every detail of your wedding, you are probably an A-Type personality just like me and want to be involved in every detail of your wedding. I get that. We get that.Wedding Planners are here to make sure that happens. Trust me, you are going to be busy on your wedding day, your mom and fiance are going to be busy too.

Who is going to be there to execute those details so you don't have to worry about them getting done and your vision happens how you've dreamed it would be. It's our job, that's what we do.

I know you hired the best photographer, and the best caterer and the best videographer! And I am thrilled that you've placed your trust in those vendors to make your wedding dreams come true! And they are fantastic at what they do!

Cynthia and John wanted their wedding to showcase Portland - a city they love - for their mostly out-of-town guests. I absolutely love the aesthetic they created: from their color palette to their venue choices, it was a whimsically modern event, and today I get to share some of their photos with you, courtesy of Kate Kelly Photography.

Cynthia wore a green necklace by Ella Mei Yon. John wore a custom suit from Duchess Clothier. They both got ready at the fabulous Ace Hotel.

Cynthia found her 1960s wedding dress at The Vintage Wedding Dress Company, out of London, with a chartreuse sash from Duchess Clothier (who also made matching ties for the groomsmen).

The bridesmaids wore gray dresses of their choosing, with cobalt blue accessories.

Cynthia and John designed their wedding stationery, and had it printed by Egg Press.

The ceremony took place on the rooftop of the Museum of Contemporary Craft. "We chose it for our ceremony because it was a good size and in the heart of Portland. It has a great urban feel, with lots of worn brick, but also surrounded with trees and filled with plants so it wasn't too cold," says Cynthia. Bagpiper Daniel Delmain played the ceremony music.

Anna Mara Flowers created centerpieces with chartreuse spider mums and poppy pods.

The reception was held at Holocene, which Cynthia says the couple chose "because it was as urban chic as it gets. Their space is so raw and industrial, but it warms up so nicely. The staff was unbelievably helpful, and their caterer, Jeremy Larter, creates local PDX cuisine at its best. Their laid-back approach made planning low-key and easy. Plus, they have a very old school black and white photobooth that the guests used to create an unforgettable guestbook."

Cynthia and John created quilted banners to hang on the railing at the ceremony site to cover up unsightly AC units, and then moved them to the reception site to hang behind the DJ. They also created coordinating pillowcases to decorate the lounge space at Holocene. They hired DJ Safi and DJ Anjali through Stylus 503, and enjoyed a variety of music, from old soul to Bollywood.

Wait, read on anyway!

One of my dreams finally came true. I'm going to marry my prince. I've waited all this time and wanted this crazy, big, fairy tale, wedding. I've been a bridesmaid 12 times and I know how weddings could be to family and friends. I wanted a wedding weekend without all the stress of making sure everything was done. A friend suggested that I hire a "wedding planner". Being an OCD, control freak, I didn't know how this will work for my personality.

I went to a wedding show in Gainesville and spoke with multiple planners. They all seemed nice but I still had misgivings. I heard about MasterPiece Weddings from various wedding vendors in Gainesville. I looked up MasterPiece Weddings website and was immediately interested in speaking with them in depth.

From the beginning, Melissa and I clicked. She personalized a package to suit me and my personality. She was a blessing and heaven sent. I could tell this was going to be one great relationship. She allowed me to be myself but was also able to reel me in, when it became too much. In her quiet, calm, confident and kind way, she was my calm within the storm.

I thought that I couldn't afford a planner, however knowing what I know now, I couldn't afford not to. I'm sure there were MANY behind the scenes scenarios that Melissa and her gang quietly handled, so that I can have the wedding of my dreams.

Although hiring a planner is an expense that most brides would rather put in their budget as an option (or in my dreams option) , I realized that it should be a must. I actually saved on many expenses because of her advice. I can go on and on about ALL the things MasterPiece Weddings has done for me, my husband and family.

I cannot thank them enough. I am proud and confident to endorse MasterPiece Weddings to MY family and friends. Thank you Melissa for everything and especially the friendship...PRICELESS.

I Regret It!

I can't work with every bride, everywhere. I know that. But there are some weddings that you think after they leave your office that you just need to work with that couple! And I mean NEED! You totally fall head over heals in love with them.

And that is how it was with Erika and Jeff, I just knew it was destiny. Well, a series of events occured and we couldn't work together. After the wedding, I got word that one of her biggest regrets was that she didn't hire us. That made me sad.

We are friends on Facebook and talk all of the time... and frankly I still love her!

Here's Erika's Story. (In her own words)

We got engaged in June of 2006 & set a date for May 5th 2007. We thought that would be ample time to plan, schedule, re-think, re-plan, & re-schedule, at least a couple of times. The first priority, besides the cake, was the photographer. We were incredibly lucky to get the photographer that I dearly wanted. She immediately recommended that we speak to Melissa {MasterPiece Weddings} for our planning needs, so we made an appointment.

After sitting down with Melissa, it became clear to us that there were a number of things that we need to account for, but at the same time, estimates were starting to come for the catering, the cake, we already had a photography contract to sign, the venue, the church, the dress, the tuxes, shoes, honeymoon, etc. Trust me, it adds up IN A HURRY! We had a limited budget & my husband, who has some OCD tendancies & works with chaos every day as an auditor, assured me that he would be able to coordinate, plan & schedule this gala event without any problems at all. "I've got it under control", he said. So, in the sole interest of saving money, we decided to not hire Melissa.....not our smartest decision.

In the months that followed, chaos turned into outright anarchy. There was the small issue of moving the wedding from Gainesville to St. Augustine for starters. Flowers, DJ's, and bridesmaids, Oh my....

Whenever we thought we had a handle on something, Murphy's law was there to slap us on the backside. We had wine labels done, but they were delivered to us & not the winery, so my husband had to drive to Howey in the Hills. It had never occurred to us that we were going to need chairs for the outdoor ceremony.....don't think Melissa would have missed that. We had to get the flowers and the cake to St. Augustine, along with all the dresses and tuxedo's......did I mention that at this point, we were really wishing we had hired Melissa? Then came the big day...

If, for one instant, you think that on the day of your wedding, you will have the time or inclination (there are mimosa's to drink) to meet with all the vendors as they arrive or that they will telepathically know where you want everything set up, you are kidding yourself, trust me, I learned the hard way. We were very fortunate to have am incredible photographer and florist that stepped up to the plate and took control, right when we about to lose it! There is no amount of self planning that can take the place of a talented, experienced, & caring wedding planner like Melissa. When we renew our vows at our 50th, there is no question that Melissa will be running the show.....put it in your blackberry right now Melissa, May 5, 2057....it's the easiest and sanest decision you'll make leading up to your big day.

Walley Wedding

I had the distinct pleasure of working with (the new) Mr. and Mrs. Walley as their Day-of Wedding Coordinator. They were married on Labor Day weekend at the Canfield Casino in Saratoga. I love this location - so stunning! And the bride and groom were stunning, too! The bride booked me over a year in advance, and was as detailed and meticulous about her weddings plans as any professional wedding planner I've seen. Sarah, if you ever decide you want to run my western New York branch of Wedding Planning Plus you're hired! Working along side me at this wedding was the ever fabulous DJ Greg Frasier, florist Kris Ann Blanchette from Fleurtacious Designs, and the great team from Classe Catering. Photographing this event was Rob Spring ( http://www.robspringphotography.com/ ) who was a blast to work with. I am very laid back and Rob has a similar attitude which is so perfect for journalistic style photography. Rob and I really clicked! It was a great wedding for a great couple and these are Rob's great pictures!

There is a lot of controversy going around as to hire or not to hire someone to help you on your wedding day… and I wonder why.

Let me clarify, we are a wedding planning company in Gainesville, Florida. That is what we do…that’s all we do. Full Planning. Day Of. We’ll plan anything, anywhere. Anything on the Planet we can Plan It! But I digress.

Why do you need a Day of Coordinator, Month of Coordinator- whatever you call it… someone to help you on the day of or month of your wedding. You have your wedding planned, your contracted with all of your wedding vendors. Now what? You don't want your mom or Bestie to be running around making sure your details are handled....

• Who is going to organize your wedding day, create your schedule for the day of your wedding, go over your contracts, make sure you and your fiancé – your mom can be guests at your party!

• Who is going to open the door for you right before you walk down the aisle… hint – NOT your mom, she’s already seated.

• Who is going to take care of THAT drunk guest at your wedding, that just so happens to be a prominent judge and is making a fool of himself and pulling down his pants on the dance floor – hint, NOT your mom!

• Who is going to inform your caterer that they didn’t include the green beans on the buffet, or make sure your 2 Vegan guests can't be served a vegetarian meal… hint- NOT your mom!

I know you said that your fiancé can be the “point” man for your wedding day, but really, when it comes time to cut the cake, and you want 20 more minutes to mingle with your friends before, is he going to stop mingling to inform the caterer, the photographer, the videographer, the DJ or Band that you need more time, because by the time he does that, you’ll need another 40 minutes. Because he just wasted 20 informing everyone.

That’s our job, we do all of that and SO MUCH more, really… it’s worth the money…. I promise!

Soooo, without further ado, welcome to Wedding Planner Week! We are going to dedicate this whole week to all questions, myths and regrets about Wedding Planners! Brides are going to be weighing-in quite honestly about why they did or didn't hire a wedding planner, and how they feel about it now.

But let's start with what exactly a wedding planner does, and why it could or should be helpful to hire one.

A wedding planner should be there as much or as little as you need help with. If you are struggling with your caterer and need help getting your contract straight, it is our job to step in and help YOU! That is the bottom line, we are there to help you!

We are also there on the day of your wedding to make sure you don't have to worry if your flowers are the wrong shade of pink or the wrong color all together. And at your reception you don't have your caterer, DJ, photographer, videographer and who ever else asking you as the bride, the same questions, we play interference! You wont' have worry about a thing!
